Letting musical elements of gospel, jazz, hip-hop, and classical music influence his style, this all-star musician highlights the black experience directly from his lens. Learn more about what drives ‘Kechi to make the music he makes.

Q: What would you say is your greatest musical influence?

A: It’s hard to choose just one. I’m classically trained (as a vocalist) and grew up in the church. But Black music as a whole has been my main influence — soul, jazz, hip hop, Afro music. I’ve been drawn to virtuosos of poetry and soul tied into one, so that includes artists like D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, Lupe Fiasco & Robert Glasper, among many others.

Q: What feeling do you want to share with your fans?

A: Familiarity. Which, I know, is another broad umbrella to put feelings under, but that’s my goal. One of my biggest personal values is empathy, that is, intentionally coming from a place of relatability and understanding. It’s something I’ve been searching for more in my life. As fresh as I want my music to sound, as much as I wanna be and “do something different” (word to T-Pain), I equally want it to feel like home for my fans. That’s what I’m building: foreign but familiar.

Kechi is determined to make foreign a staple in the ears of all who come across is dynamic and expansive sound. Be sure to connect with ‘Kechi to stay updated with his growing catalog.
