Island Gyal- “Where I fit”

Iyanla will debut the animated visual for her original poem “Where I fit” taking place in February, in honor of Black history month. The poem reflects a perspective of an unconventional mixed race girl.

She details the parallel of not feeling tall enough in the fashion industry. She also touches on lack of understanding and representation by individuals in her respective Latin, and Afro Caribbean communities.

The poem makes historical reference to the Caribbean slave trade as well.

Iyanla Kalifa Galletti is a Bronx native through and through. She owes much of her creative ability to her ever inspiring environment or her lack thereof. Her creative journey began when she was 4 years old. Her mother put her in ballet classes.

From those first sessions, Iyanla went on to attend classes for Jazz, Tap, African, Modern, Hip Hop, Salsa, Ballroom, and many other contemporary styles. Around this same time, Iyanla learned to write. She started documenting everything she experienced, visually, emotionally. She began writing poems, raps, songs. She participated in countless talent shows since then. Using every facet of performance art that she picked up along the way.

Since starting her professional modeling career 3 years ago, Iyanla has been a recognizable face in markets ranging from beauty, to tech, to clothing, and more. She’s shot for clients like Dark and Lovely, CVS, Maybelline, Nike/ Jordan, Apple, and more.

However, most of her following doesn’t know, Iyanla’s been a poet for the majority of her life. Starting to document her feelings and surroundings as soon as she learned to write. Iyanla grew up with a performance art background, being a dancer/ on stage performer since 4 years old. Her spoken word style is vivid, visual, and sensory. She ensures readers/ listeners feel deeply through the tone and use of her words.
