Complex Takes Us Back
Complex is one of the latest names to shine out of the UK underground Hip Hop community. He takes us back to a period we all know so well, our youth. There is plenty of confidence within his delivery, and the emotion we hear from Complex is enough to grip us in for the long haul.
The opener is relatively lightweight though; we do not hear the bang I would expect in the intro, but yet it works well. It leads us into the verse softly, and although there is nothing huge about it, the simplistic approach is a wise move.
The chorus stands out to me as being the most touching part of the track. It is where Complex takes us back, and it isn't easy to find yourself not becoming nostalgic in some capacity. Not everyone will relate to his lyrical use, but the majority of us will, and I did. He shares a similar background to me, which made it even more gripping.
Musically and vocally, we hear plenty of synergies. There is no room for dissonance, and all instruments flow well and add strength to the other, which is apt to witness. But, a little more variance in instrument use could have added even more flavour to this already robust piece.
One thing I am sure of is that tracks which make us feel an emotion have longevity. Therefore, it would not surprise me to hear this song still getting airplay in many years to come. Also, the story which Complex takes us on will remain just as relevant tomorrow as it does today. He is passionate, and his vocal ability adds power to a track which is already full of sentiment.
