Ariana Grande Reimagines a Brandy & Monica Hit on “the boy is mine”
Ariana Grande’s “the boy is mine” is the eighth track on her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine. It is added to the long list of songs that have sampled Brandy & Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” from 1998.
Before the song’s release, in an interview on Apple Music with Zane Lowe, Ariana details how “the boy is mine” and “true story” work as sister tracks, where “the boy is mine” is the ‘bad girl anthem’ that “true story” sets up. Regarding the song’s provocative nature and amid accusations of being a homewrecker, she said:
This is a very bad idea, I think, but… There is a large group of my fans that really do love a bad girl anthem. And this is kind of an elevated version of that.
